Waiting For Those Footsteps

Intro:

He sits alone in the darkened room
Mind alive in a closing tomb
His body's slowing, life's a chore
He sees sunny days that went before
Prays for today to bring more
Waiting for those footsteps at his door.

V1:

He remembers things from long ago
But many are lost like flowers in snow.
This world goes too fast it spins past his time
To him there's no substance, reason or rhyme.
Memories are what he lives on now.
Sometimes doesn't know when, or how.
Though one thing stays constant
In its own special way.
The lovely young girl who comes to play .
Life's small pleasures help him stay
Though he sees himself fade
A little bit everyday.

V2:

Smiling footsteps he heard
A little voice with warming words
" Hi grandpa it's me
"I've brought something, see
"A little locket, made of gold
"Inside, you and Nan before you got old
"Tell me about Nan? what was she like?
"Did you hold hands when you two were young?
"Did you sing? Did you run?
"What did you used to do for fun?"
Little girl and tired old man
Sitting as one.

V3

He raises his head and looks in her eyes
Sees a wide eyed look of little girl surprise
Her hair full length and flowing with curls
Charm and the beauty of a grandfather's girl.
"Your Nan was very special, somewhat like you
"I was lucky to meet her when we went to school
"Used to share dreams while we laughed and played
"Found all our pleasures in true love's way
"Now she is gone, and I miss her so
"But I take pleasure in watching you grow"
Little girl and tired old man
Living as one.

Exit:

He knows he doesn't have much time left
So he dwells on what makes him feel best
His mom and his dad who went before
Up to the little girl that he loves and adores
Prays for tomorrow to always bring more
Waiting for those footsteps at his door
