RVRHS Newsletter October 99
Hello everyone and welcome to autumn. The
newsletter was a little difficult to put together this month as the result of
a serious computer problem; naturally the only documents that got lost were
the October newsletter and all my e-mail. The newsletters are compiled
as information comes in and the site is usually updated as the information
comes in. As a result when I lost the October info and e-mail I had to
try and reconstruct the info received from scratch. There are definitely
some duplicates of previous entries in this newsletter, but you can always
just skim over them. There are also some updates on previous entries
that were pleasant to get. The most surprising thing is the size of this
months newsletter, 9 pages, I think that is a record.
I would like to invite everyone to join ICQ at http://www.mirabilis.com
so you can participate in real time chat on the Internet and send messages to
other people on the ICQ network. My ICQ address is 27038352 and no I
don't make anything if you join, I just think it is a really cool way to
communicate over the Internet and have been using ICQ for three years.
It would be appreciated if everyone who gets this
newsletter would take the time to drop by the site and check the information
about themselves. Anything you want to change or add will be taken care
of simply by e-mailing me. Please those of you with siblings and friends
who attended RVRHS where there is no information yet entered to please provide
some information for the site. Year after year the same last names
repeat over and over again and yet there is no info on the site about them.
I would like to make an appeal to other RVRHS
grads with websites to put a link to GeekStreet on their site. I have a
gif banner (very small only 2k) available if you would be able to add it to
your site. Drop me a line if you can help.
New to the site in September was the RVRHS
Discussion Forum, which has done ok, but could be doing better. Also new
is the RVRHS Gallery - pictures of the old school itself. Each photo is
about 100K so they take about 30 seconds each on a 56k modem to render on
screen. I will be going back in the future to get some indoor
shots…sometime. The most recent addition to the site is the RVRHS chat
room using Paralogic java based chatrooms. The applet takes about 45
seconds to load but once loaded it works in real time. Check out all the
new features on the site, take advantage of what is there.
Every month there are a number of requests for
information about specific former RVR students. If they are not listed
then I do not have the info and I almost always list all the information I
have. The best thing to do is create a new discussion thread in the
RVRHS discussion forum using the name of the person you are looking for.
They will notice it more easily when they drop by the site if there is a
specific message to them on the site.
Also on the subject of site corrections, don't be
shy let me know when there is erroneous information, misspellings and typos.
Also suggestions about possible site improvements are also welcome.
More news about RVRHS itself:
It seems the French students have been moved out
of the school to make way for adult education. E block and A block have both
been renovated to accommodate the adult students. The student lounge is now
off limits to the RVRHS students. Discussions are in the works to close RVRHS
as an English language school altogether and use McDonald Cartier to server
the needs of the English community in St. Hilaire, Otterburn, Beloeil,
McMasterville, St. Basile, St. Bruno, Chambly etcetera. This would allow the
Riverside School Board (formerly South Shore Protestant Regional School Board)
the right to convert RVRHS to an all-French institution. And so it goes…
As always I encourage you to forward your snail
mail address to Francis Howe McKechnie at AMckech563 AT aol.com
in order to get an invitation to the 2000 reunion. While I am happily
tapping away at my keyboard putting together the website Francis and her
friends are in the trenches trying to get the stuff organized for everyone to
enjoy - that deserves a big Thank You.
Just as often as I beg for information and e-mail
addresses I also beg for photos. You can e-mail photos to me in TIF, JPG
or GIF format if you wish - it certainly makes my job easier. Or you can
mail the photo(s) to me by snail mail (I will return them by the same means)

Robbie Maurice (Class of 90) rob_maurice AT hotmail.com
After I graduated in 1990, I did a year of Engineering at a college outside of
Philadelphia. After which I attended Queen's University in Kingston and
completed an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering in 1995. That
lead to a full time job as a Project Manager for a construction firm in
Timmins, Ontario. After many days of freezing my ass off or being almost
run over by out of control machinery, I opted for a less dazzling career and
enrolled at the University of Waterloo in Computer Science. After
completing my second degree in 1999 I am now working full time in Waterloo.
I still keep in contact with most of the old high school gang and am the best
man at Chris Cooke's wedding in September of 1999
Cheryl Taylor (did not graduate from RVRHS but
would have been Class of 80) NormMoor AT aol.com
I lived in Bruno and went to RVR until 1977 when I moved to BC. Back in
the old days, I was Cheryl Taylor, now I'm Cheryl Moore and I live in Edmonton
with my husband and 2 kids. I have been married for 16 years to
Norm, our daughter Heather is 14 years old
and our son Darrell is 12 years old. For the first while, I was a stay
at home mom and then I invested in real estate and decided to open my own
property management company in Vancouver. Last summer, our daughter went
to Winnipeg to study ballet with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (we're pretty proud
of her accomplishments). We moved to Edmonton in May of this year, and I
have put my business on hold until we move back to the Vancouver area, which
may be in 3 - 6 years. Until then, I will just take it easy, I have been
training with a friend to do a half-marathon (this was our birthday promise to
each other when we turned 35). I'll let you know when we success, the
race is next spring, this fall however, we have a few 10 k runs to complete.
It should be interesting.
JoAnne Turnbull (Class of 80) joannet AT internauts.ca
After RVR, I went to Marianopolis, Concordia (B.A. History) and McGill
(Master of Library and Information Science). Worked all over the artsy world -
National Archives, McGill, Concordia, McCord Museum. Tried (and hated) working
with lawyers at BCE. Now I am Director of the Lachine municipal library (and
loving it for the most part). Michel & I moved up north recently in order
to partake even more regularly of skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking and
kayaking. Lucked out on a gorgeous house with a view that I still can't quite
believe I own (we figure our stress level dropped 30% once we moved up there).
Still enjoy getting paid to buy books and getting all the newest books to read
first! Michel travels a ton as he works for the International Airline
Association. We regularly go to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (kayaking and
windsurfing), Panorama, BC (skiing and snowboarding) and I am a nut for
long-distance walking in England (could be the cream tea or maybe the ruined
abbeys). No kids (would infringe too much on our travel and leisure and we
want to make sure we don't screw up retiring by 55). Two recent unforgettable
events: kayaking with whales near Tadoussac and hiking down Chamonix in France
on a gorgeous spring day. Recently celebrated my 10th anniversary with my
wonderful hubby.
Irene Dieguez (Class of 80) irened AT mx3.redestb.es
After RVR, I went to CEGEP and University in Montreal, studied
Economics/Politics and then Management. In 1986, I started working for KLM
(Royal Dutch Airlines) in Montreal, where I stayed until 1994. I then moved to
Holland for personal reasons (a man), where I stayed for just over a year,
working and living in a small town in the south of Holland. I came back in
1995 to Montreal to figure out what to do with the rest of my life, started
working at KLM Montreal again, but in October 1995, decided to move to Madrid,
Spain and see what kind of a life I could make for myself here. Well, almost 4
years later, I am still here, I am Human Resources Manager for Spain and
Portugal for KLM in Spain, based in Madrid, and really enjoying it. The
weather, the people, the lifestyle is wonderful. I travel far too much for
business. that is the only disadvantage at the moment, I am rarely at home,
but nonetheless I have managed to make some very nice trips as vacations.
I usually come back to Montreal once a year,
around Xmas to see the family, and will try to make it for the reunion in
2000.
Darlene Gaudreau
Married with two boys, Jason - age 14 and Billy age 11. I live in Otterburn

most of my winters in arenas as my sons play hockey. Jason attends RVR (do I
feel old or what). He is in Sec. III (Grade 9). My email address is dgaudreau AT sprint.ca

Valerie Sloan (Would have been Class of 79)
I work in Boulder, Colorado, as a research scientist at the University of
Colorado in the field of Arctic climate change. One of the fun things about
being in geology is that I've had the chance to spend time in the Canadian
High Arctic, the Yukon, and the Pakistan Himalayas - all beautiful places. I
just got married in August of '99 to a guy called John Miller, and life is
good! Drop me a line at sloanv AT colorado.edu

live in Vancouver, possibly doing banking.
Pam Bryan (Class of ??) is thought to be in
Ottawa, working for the RCMP, and is married.
Pascale Bertone (Class of 80) pbertone AT ca.ibm.com
After graduating from RVR I went to Champlain College in St-Lambert where I
discovered the freedom of teachers not caring about whether you actually went
to class or not. Based on that great piece of information I spent more
time playing hearts in the band ring and drinking wine than actually attending
courses. (No, I am not proud to actually admit this) Needless to say I
never got my DEC and decided to pursue my career, from a part-time one to a
full time one, at McDonalds on Peel street. Well, that will make anyone
rapidly run back to school! So, I took some travel agent and language courses
and managed to do some contract work but not enough to make a very good
living. When an opportunity as an admin assistant came my way I jumped
on it and slowly moved up the corporate ladder. I held down various positions
in various companies for a few years until I actually acquired enough
experience at something so as to allow me to start a career. I managed
to turn myself into a re-engineering specialist in the
HR/Benefits/Payroll/Compensation area and have been working as a project
manager implementing software applications and re-designing business processes
with companies like Philips Electronics, CN Rail and Transcontinental
Printing. I was then recruited by IBM Canada as an ERP (enterprise resource
planning) Consultant with expertise in PeopleSoft applications. My job
requires a lot of travel and I probably have enough Aeromiles to pay for
family vacations until I retire. I do however love what I do and IBM is
a firm believer in balancing work and family life, so when not on a project I
work from home.
On a personal note, married with children, Nicolas 10 and Chloe 5. Both
attend Mountainview school in Otterburn Park and Nick should be entering RVR
in about 3 years. Has it been so long since we graduated that our kids
will be attending our high school???? Just a thought to leave you with.
Would love to hear from anyone out there that happens to remember me.

Right after graduation, my Dad was transferred to Washington, DC to work for
the Canadian Embassy. Unfortunately, as I was only 15 (!), and they refused to
leave me behind in Canada, but instead I enrolled back in high school and
completed Grade 12 (Yup. Had a prom and everything.)
Then, I came back to Canada and went to Carleton
University from '73 - '77. Graduated with a BA in Sociology/Anthropology. Went
to Algonquin College and after 2 years graduated with a Diploma in Creative
Advertising. And, that is how I finally determined my career-- I found a field
that I absolutely love.
I then moved to Calgary and got a job working for
a large Advertising Agency. After 3 years, I met my first husband, Sam. He was
an American who was working for an American based software company in Calgary
as Marketing Director. We moved to San Francisco in '83 and divorced in '86. I
met my husband, Peter, through the Ad Agency business, and we married in 1989.
We now have 3 boys -- Robert (8) and identical twins Jack and Christopher, who
are just turning 2 1/2. We own a home in San Anselmo, which is about 15 miles
north of San Francisco.
I've spent the last 19 years working in various
Advertising Agencies and in Marketing for several financial services firms.
Most recently, I've spent the last 4 years working for a mid-sized Direct
Marketing company in San Rafael (about 20 minutes north of SF) where I'm VP of
Strategic & Creative Services. I really love what I do and wouldn't change
it for all the money in the world (well, maybe a few million...). We did move
back to Toronto in 1994, when I opened the office for a SF based agency (Cohn
& Wells) and we spent 14 mos. enduring Toronto cold, snow and humid summer
weather -- ick.
Now we're busy with a noisy, testosterone filled
household, are avid Niners fans and enjoy beautiful weather year-round -- and
a few earthquakes.

For anyone who knew me in high school they knew my goals were to play pro
hockey; that fell through due to a few serious injuries. Instead of
scholarships to u.s. colleges I went to McGill and received me Bachelor of
Education in Elementary Education: later childhood; then my Masters of
Education in Educational Psychology. I am married to a girl from St.Hilaire
and we are currently working and living in Charlotte, North Carolina. We have
been here for 6 years and married for 6 years (she wouldn't let me come down
alone - ha) she is a manager at a local gold's gym (Roxanne Provencher) and I
teach behavioral and emotionally disturbed students in a fifth grade
classroom, and recently became a certified personal fitness trainer. I am
still involved in hockey as the goalie coach for the Charlotte Jr. Checkers
minor hockey organization. Our kids travel to games throughout north and South
Carolina. We recently purchased our first house and escaped hurricane Floyd's
wrath. A lot of changes since RVRHS - all pretty good.

I also did secondary 6 in the automobile field in '85. After that,
I did various jobs, tool rental shop, service man at Canadian Tire, Army
Reserves in St. Hubert still there after 15 years ), went to college at
Champlain part time at night, and then fulltime. Graduated in '89 with a DEC
in creative arts. Since then I have worked as a mechanic at various places (
again Canadian Tire, Sears, Mister Muffler, and Secur armoured trucks. Also
done photography, repaired banking machines, videographer, and
audio-visual technician.
I have lived on the south shore almost
exclusively, except for a short stint downtown, where I met my wife. Got
married in '94 and now have 3 boys, all under 5 years! Quite a handful! Can't
wait till they start playing hockey at 6 am! I currently reside in Beloeil,10
minutes from RVR. I am now working for the Department of National Defense as a
heavy vehicle mechanic at Longue-Pointe workshop in east end Montreal.
