RVRHS Alumni September 01 Newsletter There was a fire at Mountainview Elementary School (formerly Mountainview High School) on Sept 04, 01. It looks like the kitchen was pretty much trashed. Back to school was delayed for a little while (probably until the 10th). Alum Bruce Carswell (Class of 80) custodian of Moutainview must have his hands full about now. I am sure we all wish him luck in getting everything back together and running smoothly for the kids. Also on the topic of Mountainview - there are two Mountainview websites out there of which I have only recently been made aware. The URLs are www.geocities.com/mountainview2000ca/mhsotterburn.html Anyone wishing to send along links to any other English language Quebec high school or elementary school alumni site I will be glad to include them in the next newsletter. I have seen a new tag on emails: ESQ = English Speaking Quebecer - too funny. If any Ex-Otterburners are interested in the possibility of a reunion in the year 2002 please contact Karen Cree at kasey128 AT sprint.ca. Teresa Canniff (Class of 91) is working on organizing a Class of 91 reunion for Canada Day 2002. Anyone from the Class of 91 is encouraged to contact her at tcanni AT hotmail.com . Teresa is also trying to create a Class of 91 picture book and would like either hard copy or electronic photos from 91 grads well in advance of the reunion to facilitate this project. Jill DeJean (Class of 86) teachergirl AT sympatico.ca is trying to get in touch with Ross Smith (Class of 85) if you can provide any info please email her directly. Mike Beausoleil (Class of 80) will be in our national capital (that’s Ottawa) between October 8 and 16 and is interested in meeting up with Class of 80 types. I am planning to head down and meet him there to bend and elbow and tell some lies. Anyone else interested in participating contact Mike at mlbeausoleil AT yahoo.com That’s it for the small talk, now onto the updates. There are more than the usual number of deceased notices in this months newsletter. I am thinking of putting up an “in memoriam” section. Anyone wishing to express an opinion about this I am more than eager to hear your thoughts. Teacher R McHarg Deceased from a heart attack summer of 75. Cheryl Lynn Taylor (Class of 70) Deceased. Barbara Smith (Class of 71) ehanzelka AT home.com Living in Oshawa, Ont. Love to hear from old friends from Otterburn where I grew up. I am married with 2 cats and no children. Stopped working 6 years ago to pursue a golfing career (chuckle, chuckle). I lead a lovely life rich in love and friendships. I keep in touch with Lynne Atkinson and Lynn Smith from my teenage years and would love to hear from other childhood friends. Frank Campbell (Class of 71) beaconsf AT info-internet.net After graduating I wandered over to Champlain then eventually went on to Concordia and Mcgill in Economics, Political science and Marketing. I am currently working in the Aerospace Industry and have traveled the world as Marketing Manager in the repair and overhaul of gas turbine engines. I have been married for 11 years to a beautiful wife and have 3 amazing kids 9,7 and 2 years, 1 dog and 2 cats. I now live on the west island of Montreal and for people that remember me I still love cars and would like to hear for some of my old friends. You can contact me at beaconsf AT info-internet.net I was the same as many of you in that when I same the names it brought back great memories Ken Smarznik (Class of 71) kenomi AT starpower.net or ksmarzik AT deloitte.com It is a wet summer evening in Northern Virginia when, as I was going thru the daily emails, my spouse - Nona - told me that her high school, Rosemont High, was celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. Wow I replied, I wonder what happened to my high school, and went surfing off to find this site. It was strange reading thru the list of names, the memories were strong and I'll definitely take the yearbooks off of the shelf tomorrow evening and have a gander through them. Well, here is my update for the last 30 years. After RVR, I went to Nova Scotia Agricultural College, where I bumped into Steve Troop, who was going to Acadia University. Steve and I saw each other a couple of times, but were not sober long enough to remember much. I attended Steve's wedding and have never seen him since. Anybody know where he is? While attending MacDonald College in St. Anne, I went into town one day to the McGill bookstore and lo and behold bumped into Ken Saunders. He was demonstrating in favor of a pay hike for the janitorial staff. Ken looked the part, with the beret, signs, power to the people, etc ........... After graduating from McGill in 1975, I went on to the University of Guelph to do a Masters, where I literally bumped into Bruce Webster, who was doing a Masters there also. The last time I saw of heard of him also ......... From Guelph, I took a job in Newfoundland as an agricultural representative for a couple of years and then went off to Agriculture Canada. From there to the Bank of Montreal - Kingston and Toronto - as their regional agricultural lending expert. As overseas work had always interested both my spouse and I, when the opportunity came up to work at a small development bank in Haiti, off we went with visions of making the world a better place to live, restore democracy, etc, etc, etc. Well we failed, but we did get to spend 7 years travelling in the Caribbean, consuming copious quantities of excellent rum and I learned how to find bankable deals in one of the toughest investment climates that you can find. We left Haiti in 1994, with a 4 year old son, Misha, and went off to Morocco. I took a job there with a US development consulting firm, Chemonics International, working with the Government to improve the environment for small and medium enterprises. That lasted 5 years and ended up with me returning to their home office in Washington DC. While we were in Morocco, we spent one summer vacationing back home, at Owl's Head and I met a lady - can't remember her name, but she did have 8 children and ran marathons - who knew Brian Quick, Mark Boyne and a few of the other St. Bruno crowd. Small world it is. We've been in the DC area for almost three years now and are really enjoying it. Although the weather is a little stifling in the summer, the remaining part of the year is very nice and the area has some much to offer - politics and all. About a few months ago, I switched jobs and now work with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Emerging Markets, still doing development consulting. That's it in a nutshell. Definitely look forward to hearing from you all and if ever you are in the DC area, please do not hesitate to call. Ken Smarzik 2116 Kings Garden Way Falls Church, Virginia 22043 703-761-6966 kenomi AT starpower.net or ksmarzik AT deloitte.com Look forward to hearing from you! Steve Adam (Class of 74) besner-adam AT sympatico.ca Hi guys, Never left Montreal as a home base but have traveled the world in my jobs in int'ls sales/biz development for past 18 years or so. Leaving RVR, then graduated from Champlain College, spent 1.5 yrs in Edmonton skiing and having a great time. Came back to McGill (B.Com. '82) and since then have been with a number of cos including my own for a few years. Married now for 15 years, with two sons, live in Kirkland and still spend as much of my down time: skiing, golfing, TENNIS (mainly indors at Cub West Island during the winter), and have recently started fly fishing in upstate New York on weekends and any other time I can. Would love to hear from anyone, and Jimmy (Brace) let's try to get together in August (I agree about Gary). Cheers for now/Steve (T: 514 630-3352) PS: reading everyone's stories brings back a lot of old memories. It would be good to see you all again (except you Gary... unless you want to hear the table joke one more time), and especially all the cute girls I remember! Write!! Louise Stinson (formerly Hearn) (Class of 75) patnweezy AT home.com I just got married and changed my email address. I'd love to hear back from any of my old friends. With my common-law wife Madeleine (no children) I enjoy travelling; particularly, to the east coast where the rest of my family resides, golfing, skiing and a pursuing a number of other pursuits. It's nice to see that someone has put such an effort into this web page. While I haven't seen anyone from RVRHS since Tom Stanger visited me down east in the late seventies, if you write I will respond. Virginia Howe (Class of 76) tallan AT hawk.igs.com Life has been pretty good to me so far. Alain Doiron (Class of 77) allain AT nb.ain.com I cant believe I found this website what a panaroma of flashbacks!! Of course we all had our own memories of good ole RVRHS. I would be a liar if I told you mine were all good. I’ve always wanted to make a pilgrimage back there, but the thought often spooked me immensely. When I realized there existed a photo archive it was a virtual trip back .Since I have discovered this site my collective memory has taken a front end collision. I am fine and funky living in NB in Moncton and working for business publication, doing art, biking, running and attempting to stay sane. After RVR it took a few decades to put me back on track. I would like to hello to all of the class of 77 and 78. I would to hear from you all. Big Hugs Alain Doiron Derrick Varney (Class of 77) derrick.trumpa AT vw.com You all probably remember me as Derrick Varney (my step father's name) but I am now using my birth father's. So where to begin? After graduation I headed off to Dawson College's Lemoyne Campus for not quite a full semester. The traveling into Montreal from St Hilaire was cutting into my party time, and the fact that college wasn't paying me to be there, was a definite turn off. Tried Champlain a year later, same result. So I headed off into the world to find my fortune. Spent time as a glass-cutter, sound and light technician for a rock and roll review, telemarketing firm, 10 years on and off in kart racing, and now for the last 7 years I am the Director of Parts and Service Marketing for Volkswagen Canada. Married to Debbie Grimshaw (Class of 76) 3 kids Kim 11, Ryan 10, Matthew 7. Living in Oshawa Ont. Still working on my fortune, I also have a successful Wholesale/Retail Marketing business. Peter Riehm (Class of 77)peter AT artlifedesign.com Paul Laverdure (Class of 77) drpaul AT sk.sympatico.ca Married with three children now all in elementary school, I finished a doctorate in history at the University of Toronto after Religious Studies at McGill. I then went back for some useful business courses at Concordia at night. I made a living translating, editing, tutoring, researching and writing. While not giving up hope on a university job, I took a contract for three years in Saskatchewan to -- get this -- establish and manage a Ukrainian-language archive for a religious congregation. I'm still here, trying to improve my Ukrainian and doing a little bit of teaching at the University of Regina. I can be reached also at Box 246, Gravelbourg, Sask, S0H 1X0. Thats all for now folks. shivers_666 AT hotmail.com Paul Mensé (Class of 78) starman1 AT total.net Hi everyone. Don’t bother checking your yearbook. I never bothered to fill in the form and never got my picture takened. I guess now Mr. Sinclair knows why I came back early while everyone else under the 'M' category came back late. Anyhow, I’ve gone through the Faculty site and I noticed my Grade 10 and 11 English teacher is not listed. Her name is Mrs. Galdy. Does anyone know what happened to her? I heard a rumour that she was forced to retire several year after I finished high school because her husband was very sick. And whatever happened to Mrs. Jaskula and Mr. Jak (or is it Mr. Jack??), the Vice-Principals? Didn’t I hear somewhere that Mr. Sinclair become Principal of RVR a couple years back? Drop me a line if anyone knows. April Archambault (Class of 79) april.yvan AT sympatico.ca Yvan and I have been married for 13 yrs. We live in St. Jean Baptiste, Que. Gaston Carreau (Class of 80) carreau AT comnet.com Debbie Kay (Class of 80) doakay AT ns.sympatico.ca Yes, the rumor was true, I did join the Armed Forces, specifically the Air Force. After 17 years in the service, I have finally run into someone (indirectly) who went to RVR. I met Stephen Petipas Mom and Dad after a change of Command Parade at 12AMS Shearwater in Dartmouth, NS. They told me about the web site, so here I am with some personal info to add to the list. I had received an invitation to the 10th Anniversary Reunion, while I was in Cold Lake but was unable to attend due to squadron operational commitments. Deb Kay 30 Willowdale Dr., Dartmouth, NS. B2V 1C2 1-902-433-1670 Christina Lawn (Class of 81) xina_lawn AT hotmail.com After graduating in 81, I attended Dawson College to study recreation. I tried to get a job in my field, but found I was competing with candidates who had bachelors' degrees in recreation. "OK" I thought, "I'll play the game” and promptly registered for Leisure Studies at Concordia. I tried again to get a job, but now I was competing with people who had Masters degrees in Recreation. That was a bit much thought, I'm becoming over qualified! I decided to apply to be a flight attendant, which had always been my dream. I had interviews with Canadian, Wardair and Air Canada. I was very fortunate to get hired by the "right one" although nobody could have known this at the time!. I have been with Air Canada now for thirteen years and love every minute of it. I can honestly say I enjoy work and look forward to going. Seven years ago I decided to become an "In-Charge"; that's the head flight attendant. So pay attention to those announcements when you travel, I always identify myself and I get a kick out of meeting old classmates from time to time! On a more personal note, I got married in 92 to Robert Heidt, of St. Hubert. We live in Kirkland , in the West Island of Montreal. We chose not to add to the over population of the world , and enjoy traveling extensively. I continue to take classes, for interest , from time to time at Concordia. Marc Marsh) (Class of 85) marc AT usahostels.com After starring in Peter Bailey's movie "First Kiss", I ran off to Hollywood to become a big movie star. I soon realized that no casting director was very impressed with such a small portfolio of just one movie, despite it being a "cult classic". So I went back into business and am now Vice-President of Operations for USA Hostels (our website was created and is maintained by Peter Bailey class of '85). We have hostels in Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas, and will soon be expanding to San Francisco, Seattle, Florida and Fiji.
