RVRHS Alumni October 00 Newsletter

Hello all, and welcome to autumn. I finally got around to this months newsletter - what else are long weekends for other than to give you a break from planning your Monday mornings J. There really isn't that much this month the influx of new messages was a little slim - I am starting to think that the majority of RVRHSers who are online have surfed the site already and either have messaged me already or have taken a pass on joining in the conversation.

This message from Brenda Wilson (Class of 81)
Hi folks. As I am sure many of you don't remember me, I'll get right to the point. I have spoken / e-mailed a few people
regarding a re-union for our graduating class. Since there were many positive comments, I decided to see if enough interest could be generated for a supper/re-union/party/whatever.... If you are interested, you can e-mail me, or leave a message on the Geekstreet phorum page. If enough people are interested in a "real" re-union in the year 2001, a lot of organizing has to be done.

1. Who is interested in a Re-union in the year 2001?
2. What date(s) would be convenient for a re-union?
3. Who is available to help out with organizing a 2001 re-union?
4. Who else can you contact from the Grad Class of '81?

Any suggestions (within reason, please!) will be greatly appreciated.

If possible, can you forward this onto as many 81 grads as you know.

Thanks

Brenda Wilson

I am looking for an email address for Lindy (Class of 72) or Carol (Class of 73) Blais. I believe I saw Carol's in one of your newsletters.

After taking a course in Library Technology in Quebec and graduating in 1975 I went to work for Sun Life. In 1978 I married my husband and was transferred to Toronto. For the past twenty three years we have resided in Burlington, Ontario and have raised three wonderful children. The oldest just left home this fall for her own college education. After working for the same company for 25 years I have been declared redundant and am currently looking for a new job.

Now I'm married and have 3 kids (ages 13, 12 and 10). We live about 2 hours north of Toronto or 30 minutes south of Owen Sound. I've lived in Ontario for 20 years. No longer working, (well at least not outside the home!). I'm rearing children! Love to hear from anyone from 1973 or at least anyone who remembers me!

I flirted with the University of Manitoba and McGill University for a few years but nothing serious ever came of it. A few dates with Electrical Engineering, went steady with Commerce for three years, but then a breakup in the early 80's and I haven't turned to a University since.

In 1979 I joined the Naval Reserve as a summer job, and then continued to work part-time (a series of 4-month summer terms and evening/weekend work during the rest of the year) until I retired after 13 years as a naval Lieutenant. My specialty was logistics, and dealt with finance, food services, and supply. It was a blast...from the early days of training---survival training on Forbidden Plateau on Vancouver Island to actual fire-fighting in buildings filled with thousands of gallons of oil to the later years with tremendous personal and team challenges that lead to precious friendships and (some) character development. Hey, sailing into San Diego and Mazatlan was too hard to take too! I owe a lot to the training, and all the friends I made in the Naval Reserve...even the job I currently enjoy would not have been mine without the leadership and management skills I developed in the Reserve. Your children could do worst than seek employment with the Naval Reserve...!

My work with the Naval Reserve was a part-time career though. When I was going to University my summers were spent employed with the Reserve, and during the school year I would also worked one or two evenings a week and the occasional weekend for the Reserve. After I left University I was recruited by the Canadian Coast Guard. I continued to work with the Reserve,
but just an evening or two a week, as those 'long lazy' summers of university students no longer occurred...just the two or three week vacation. I spent a year assisting with the setup of a Coast Guard vessel that was being constructed and then joined the east-coast fleet (in Halifax-Dartmouth) for another four years working on a Search and Rescue vessel (Mary Hitchens). Made some good friends and enjoyed life at sea. A treasured visit to Sable Island, with its wind swept beach and wild ponies and one or two actual rescues of boats and people in trouble (what a concept!) leave good memories of my time with them. After a year ashore working in the Regional Headquarters I left the Coast Guard in August 1990, and packed up to move to Victoria, BC, to return to school (finished) and have worked with the Provincial Government in a series of positions since then, most recently working as a manager in an IT branch for the Ministry of Finance.

Been married to Doris [nee Poirier] since 1987, with 3 year old Roger racing around the house/playgrounds, and second child on the way this December. We love Victoria and the west coast of Canada.

My best wishes to fellow 1976 RVRHSers.

My family moved to St.Lambert just prior to graduation. Went to Champlain College and then onto McGill where I got a Master's in Chemical Engineering. I moved to Toronto and met my future husband on my first day of work. I got married while in Toronto and then decided to move south. We first ended up in Columbus, Ohio for a couple of years. Then we decided to move even farther south and have now been living in North Carolina for about the last 10 years. People tell me I have lost the Canadian accent and now have a southern twang ! I love this part of the US and I don't miss the Canadian winters. I got tired of engineering and decided to go back to school and chose to study law. I went to night school and just graduated last May. I am currently working as an Immigration attorney with a firm in Raleigh. My husband is a Director with a large software company and travels internationally. Fortunately I have been able to go on many trips with him. I have a 10 year old son who keeps me very busy with all his activities and energy level.

Following RVR, I languished in my parents' basement for a number of years while completing CEGEP, and then a Bachelor's in Applied Math at Concordia. I then worked for seven years at an unknown trucking company, doing payroll and accounting. After getting turfed from there due to a downturn in business, I latched on to the company for whom I work presently - an engineering co. in Montreal. I work as their human resource manager. I still do payroll as an aside.

During the past six years I have performed in community theatre, curled in the Legion National Championships (2), been married (1997), and had two beautiful children - Megan (April, 1998) and Riley (June, 2000), and added a certificate in H.R. management from McGill. I don't expect to have any more kids but, I haven't as yet been fixed and I know that, in the Olympic tradition, my swimmers are tops!

I intend on completing an MBA within the next five years and foresee a move to Nova Scotia where my wife's family lives (I'm so sick of Montreal bridges!). Please feel free to e-mail me for whatever reason.

Connie Cant (Class of 81)
Hi everybody. Here's a little update since graduation... Partied quite a bit in my twenties, along with a job at Mcgill University as a library technician. Played soccer for the Canadian Women's National soccer team. While playing for Canada I travelled to England, Denmark, China, Taiwan, Bulgaria, all over the US and Canada. I was co-captain for the last two years I played. My sister Maureen also made the National team for the first two years. After retiring from soccer I went back to school for nursing and am currently working in the cardiac care unit of the Jewish General Hospital. I married Mark Pilch from Dorval in 1995 (Mr. Dorval Bodybuilding Champ 1998) and we have two beefcake boys Evan (5) and Dylan(1). We bought a house in Pointe-Claire. I have also reconnected with Caroline deLeeuw from our graduating class of 81. We played soccer together for the past year in an old ladies league!!! Looking forward to our 20 year reunion!!!!
