RVRHS Alumni April Newsletter

OK after several suggestions/complaints some changes have been made to make the site a little more user friendly. First and foremost is that the form that used to be there which was a javascript form has been replaced by a PERL script form and now works much better. It still requires that people fill it out, but it is clearer to everyone that the information has been sent once you click the submit button. Second is that as of this month's updates a note will appear at the end of the entry noting when the information was last updated. I am NOT going to do this retroactively to all the information that is currently on the site. With any luck everyone will eventually update his or her info eventually. It's amazing but believe it or not both of these suggestions came from multiple sources all within the same week. Kind of hard to ignore when they come that way :)

On a personal note my son has just been filmed by Global TV for a sports feature on male figure skaters. He is just coming off of a silver medal performance at Massena, NY and looking forward to a summer where he will learn the Dutch Waltz in preparation for a dance partner and maybe land a solid toe loop. It took me 35 years to find a focus in life he has done it in 6, I am starting to doubt who the father is J.

A new feature of the newsletter - with an eye to eventual sponsorship of the newsletter - is the site of the month. This month's site of the month was one that I stumbled across on my web meanderings. There are two sites that I would like you to visit - at least drop by if you can : http://www.hornyforgod.com/  is well worth the look in some ways it is what art on the web should be. The other site is a computer software site that has a really cool product - http://www.ripbar.com  - a software that works - go figure.

After ditching chemical technology a year into the field, I got a journalism degree from Concordia. I worked on a number of community newspapers in Ontario and Quebec before becoming a freelancer. Now my freelancing is second fiddle to my 3-year-old daughter, who is the reason I'm back living in the (relatively) clean air of Chambly. You can't beat the suburbs for reasonable real estate!

Mike Dworkin (Class of 77) nedandmike AT hotmail.com
Well, it's 1AM (noon in Quebec) on a February night, and I'm sitting on a small island in the Indian Ocean 100 kilometers off the Western Australia coast, reminiscing about high school days long, long ago and far far away!

After leaving RVRHS, I went through the Champlain and McGill turnstiles. Graduated in Chemical Engineering but have never worked in that field. Married Debby Connolly in 1981 (Chambly and Champlain people will probably remember the tiny girl that wore ribbons!), and we have two children, Krystle - 17 and Ryan - 15. Moved to Edmonton and started work in the oil business (I'm still in the oil patch). Moved again to Slave Lake Alberta (very close to the a-- hole of the planet) in 1984. Deb and I went our separate ways in 1986 (she is now back in Edmonton) and I moved to Australia in 1988. Have lived here ever since, first in Adelaide, then Sydney, Brisbane and finally Perth. Yes, I do love Oz - absolute paradise! Have travelled quite a bit and work as a consulting engineer on offshore oilfields and once in awhile I get out of the office in Perth, that's why
I'm here. I re-married a beautiful (and a fair bit younger) Ozzie girl last year.

I still go back to Canada quite often to see the kids. Talking to them now reminds me so much of my RVR days.

Would love to hear from my old mates from RVRHS (especially Kim Parkes if anyone knows where she is), loved those days. Hope everyone is well.

Joe Gregoire (class of 77) jgregoire AT jetnet.ab.ca
After I graduated from RVR, I joined the Department of National Defense (22+ years ago) and was posted to Ottawa. It was there that I met my wife of 16 years, Susan Schults. In 1987 I was posted to Edmonton and remained there for 6 years which is where Sue and I had our two children Steven 13 and Angela 10. In 1993 I was posted to the Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics in Borden Ontario. I taught there for a year and mover over to teach at the Air Command Professional Development Training Center, where I remained for 3 years. For those of you who know me, you are probably finding this hard to swallow, but I guess we all have to grow up sooner or later. I still wouldn't trade those old years for anything. So I left Borden in 1997 and was posted to Cold Lake Alberta, which is where I currently reside. I am a Warrant Officer and in charge of the heavy equipment section on the Base and look after the three runways that keep our Fast-Movers in the air. Sue, myself and the kids love Alberta and we are looking at purchasing and acreage in the next couple of years and moving out to the country.

This is a picture of me from back in July of 2000 (just another snowy day). I did a 6 month tour up in Alert, Nunavut. For those of you who aren't sure where that is, next time you get a chance, grab and atlas and look at the most northern tip of Canada. Take Care, Joe.

Paul Nicholson (Class of 78) pb.nich AT sympatico.ca
After leaving high school I worked for a few year and then joined the Canadian Armed Forces (Air Force). While I was completing my trades training (Aero Engine Technician), I got married in 1984 to the girl I had been with for the three previous years. In 1987 I left the forces and joined Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC). I am still with P&WC and I am now in my 14th year with the company. Presently employed as a senior customer support representative. During this time my wife gave birth to my three wonderful children, Corinne who is now 12 going on 16, Sabrina 10, in girly mode and my son Adam is 5. In 1997 my wife asked for divorce much to my surprise. I have been divorced for 3 years and my children and I have found new happiness in our lives. I am currently living in St-Hubert and considering moving to Greenfield Park where my children will eventually all attend Centennial High school.

I work for the West Virginia Air National Guard as a Crew Chief on the C-130H turbo prop "Herk" affectionately known as the trash hauler of the air force. I'm a single father of two wonderful daughters 17 and 13 both who keep me busy in "soccer" and "tap and jazz classes". I have been traveling the world from Seriavo to Japan, and Canada to Peru. After graduating, yes I graduated, I went to Dawson College and then Champlain. Lets just say if I stayed in CEGEP I would still be there. Have to say hello to "The Animals". Hey Guys how are you? We were insane but did we ever have fun. Where is Tony Bedard? After realizing CEGEP was not a party, I finally got a real job. I've progressed in Transportation Logistics and I am now the Customs & Traffic Manager at a car parts manufacturer. Believe it or not I never ended up in jail. I did "clean up" my act. I presently live in Ajax, Ontario and I have a 15 year old daughter in Montreal. She is incredible and I am trying to teach her that men are only after one thing at that age. I would know because being single I know that men are still after the same thing at my age. I was talking about friendship you sickos. Great to see those reunion photos. E-mail me if you remember me.

I got transferred to Toronto in 1998 with Nortel Networks and am currently working as an executive assistant for Nortel living in Oakville, Ontario. I have two boys Alexander (7 yrs old) and Nicholas (5 yrs old) who keep me very busy with their sports and activities. I often visit Montreal as my older sister and parents still live on the South Shore. (updated April 01, 2001)

Nicholson, Perry (Class of 81) PerryNicholson AT aol.com
I finally decided to drag my sorry posterior into the new millennium. Almost twenty years since I've seen most of you! Damn! When we were listening to "time waits for no-one " we couldn't really grasp how true those words were.
It 's amazing to see what some people have done with their lives! You know you expect some things from some people, like Mugsy working in the music industry or one of the Tuli's becoming a doctor, but some folks just like to surprise us.
I did the usual route through college and university and drifted along until I ended up in Shawbridge working with troubled youth. I know some may think " Nicholson counseling delinquents...... that's like the blind leading the blind!", well...I've been at it for over a decade and we haven't hit too many walls on the way. Over the last couple of years I've also been working at a primary school in Oka. The munchkins are a refreshing break from some of the harder cases we see in Batshaw.
Luckily for me, while I was studying I met my lovely wife, Kelly. After twenty years of the south shore, we decided to give the north shore a shot and moved to Deux Montagnes. We've been here ever since. Sara will be twelve this year and Conor will be nine. When I'm not working, playing hockey or working on the house, I'm normally coaching one of the kids in soccer, hockey or ringuette. All of you fellow grads with kids know what I'm saying, it's time consuming but gratifying!!
I've kept in touch with a few, lost touch with too many, but always have my ears open for news on old friends. Maybe we'll see some of you this spring, Hope life is treating you well !

Tim Susel (Class of 81) tim.susel AT sympatico.ca

Mike McCarthy (Class of 81) tok2myhrt AT hotmail.com
After doing my time at RVRHS is spent a couple of years bouncing around doing odd jobs in the Montreal area. Finally, I enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent 11 years traveling around the states, stationed in Germany, Korea, and a stint in the Gulf War where upon I received a AT #%*load of medals to pin on my chest. I managed an 8 year marriage which provided my with a wonderful son Marty. I've been enjoying the single dad life since 1995. After my time in the service I found myself hanging out in California, and finally settled in San Diego, where I'm a Management Analyst with the U.S. Navy. I know its hard to sum up all the years in this excerpt but I have managed to touch bases with some of the alumni. I've noticed that so many have written in and have gone onto higher education. Still working on my degrees but I did manage to knock out my Associates in Business Management and Administration. I'll actually have more credentials towards my Masters before I complete my Bachelors due to the continued education from the Navy.

I'm enjoying the temperate weather in San Diego where I can get a round of golf in every weekend, stressed out over the traffic, and the calming sound of the ocean's waves along the shores. Great views too if you like the ocean. Pascale Bertone and family know what I'm talking about.

Scott Smith (Class of 81) swsmith AT hotmail.com
After RVR I got a degree in Aerospace Engineering. Went to work for Pratt & Whitney where I still am today! I'm currently working on designing turbines for the newer turbofan engines used in regional jet applications.

Got married in 1998. My wife, Genevieve Beauchemin, is a national reporter for CTV. You can see her on the 11 o'clock national news with Lloyd Robertson most nights (channel 12). Currently we're living in Montreal.

I'm still active in lots of sports; hockey, skiing, mountain biking and windsurfing mostly. Even started a mountain biking webpage a while back: http://pages.infinit.net/endo99/

I'm currently returning to my "school band" roots and am studying classical piano at the McGill Conservatory of Music as well as playing drums in the occasional "garage band" with the guys from work. Must have been Mr.Henke's influence!

Janice Melnechuk (Class of 81) gjscride AT sympatico.ca
I spent much time after RVR, working in and out of the horse industry. A short stint in Ontario, working in retail and I was (believe it or not..) back to RVR for an adult Office Skills course. Spent the next few years working in different offices when in 1991, I met my husband (we married in 1995). We spent the next 5 years travelling (mostly on weekends) the Northeastern U.S and Quebec, competing at ... rodeos. My husband is a bareback bronc rider and rodeos steadily throughout the year. Can you imagine I married a French-Canadian cowboy! I have been a stay-at-home mom since 1998 when my son Shane was born and in 2000 we had our millenium girl, Catrina. We own a small fermette somewhere between St-Hyacinthe and Granby QC and raise grain-fed chickens in summer. Between the kiddies , my horse, dog and hubby, life is good, healthy and very active! Hope to see you at the reunion! You can contact me at gjscride AT sympatico.ca

Paul Boucher (Class of 82) pboucher AT essj.qc.ca
After RVR, I went on to study trombone and piano in CEGEP, and piano at McGill. My work is split between many jobs: in a private high school I teach music sec. 3-4-5 and work in the audiovisual dept. I also teach private piano lessons in another school and play in two steady bands doing mostly corporate events and private parties, and I do freelance piano and keyboard gigs.
In 1985, I met "la woman of my dreams" and have been with her since. We are living in Saint-Hyacinthe and are the proud parents of three beautiful girls.

Eric Clegg (Class of 82) cleggettos AT yahoo.ca
Since 1982, I've lived in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto working in various fields including Graphic Design, the Music Biz, and the film industry. While in TO, played in a couple of fairly popular bands (toured through Ontario, New York and Michigan, released a couple of albums, video and have some of our music in Movies and TV shows), and had a lot of fun. I'm back in Montreal now working as Graphic Designer for Fabricville as well as running a website design business with my lovely wife, Sarah (Got married in June, 2000). Of course, still writing songs, playing drums for one band, singing for another, and enjoying life!

Linda Smeall (Class of 82) lhryma AT hotmail.com
After high school I started working at RBC Dominion Securities (thanks to fellow classmate Cheri Duboy now Taylor). Worked there for a few years before moving to a smaller Fixed Income firm. Went to Florida on vacation where I met my future husband Mark (a Hamiltonian). Fell in love and then packed up my bags and headed West to Toronto (along with quite a few other fellow classmates it seems). We got married in May 1995 and bought a house in Oakville, Ontario. I have been working for an Investment firm in Toronto for 5 years and have a 2 year old beautiful daughter named Cassidy. My husband works as an aerial camera operator (his most recent job was a 2 month film job in Australia filming the latest Survivor -The Outback series.) Life is great in Toronto but I still miss Montreal for the skiing and cottage country. Would love to hear from some old classmates. Any news on an upcoming 20 year reunion next year?

I left R.V.R. in '83 and spent a couple of years at a boarding school in England. Returned to St- Hilaire in at the end of '84. I did the Dawson thing for a while and started working part-time at U.P.S. Part-time quickly turned into full time and fourteen years later I'm still there.(U.P.S. not Dawson)
I married Lori Gibbs (class of '82) in 1993. We have two boys. Matthew is 6 and Riley is 3. We have lived in St-Hilaire since 1994 and benefit from the best kind of daycare...my parents.
My father, Paul Jones, retired after 30 plus years at RVR and now spends most of his days writing. He has been published in various trade magazines(anyone who pays) and has sold a few stories to Reader's Digest.

Phil Sisco (Class of 85) phil.siscoe AT cdcgy.com
In a nutshell....I went from RVR to do one year of CEGEP then on to Royal Military College in Kingston Ontario. There I complete a degree in Electrical Engineering. I spent some time in the Navy (hated it...) and transferred to the Air force as an Aerospace Engineer. Got out of the military in '94 with a golden handshake (thanks Jean!) and went backpacking through Australia for 8 months. Learned to hang glide and fell madly in love with the sport. I've nee in Calgary for the past 6 years. I'm working at Computing Devices Canada currently as a systems engineer on a U.S. Marine Corps command and control system. I try to get out to the mountains, hang gliding or skiing etc. any chance I get.

I am doing well, living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Trying to cope with cold weather. I have lived here for 10 years, before that I was living in Germany where I met Steve (my husband) and got married, three months later we moved back to Canada. I have 2 great boys. Evan 10 and Drew 7. We are kept busy with Basketball, both kids love the game. As for the rest of my life, I am working as a Midwife for the Regional Health Authority. I love my job, and could not have imagined that in HS this would be the job I would be doing. I love all of the new born babies, I get all the perks of watching them grow without all of the work. Just like a grandma. I look forward to hearing from some old friends soon.

Alison Laekas (Class of 86) alaekas AT ca.inter.net
I can not believe it has been 15 years since we ran the halls of R.V.R.... What can I say, well I've been married for 7 years, we have a daughter and are expecting a son in August 2001. I live in Laval. I work in T.M.R. as an office manager of an Orthopaedic and Physiotherapy clinic. I'm still in contact with quite a few people from R.V.R and everyone is doing well for themselves...

As many of you know, I moved back to California after graduating from RVR. After graduating from high school again the following year, I attended UC Santa Barbara and got a BS in Environmental Sciences. After five great years in Santa Barbara, I moved back north to the Bay Area in 1995. After realizing how difficult it was to make a decent living in the environmental field and considering that I lived in the Silicon Valley, I changed my career. I now do computer-related work. I currently work and live in San Francisco. I'm not married, but I'm workin' on it! The only individual I have kept in contact with is Justin.

Sheryl Ciszewski (Class of 89)
Hi everyone. It was really nice to read up on what some of us are up to. As for me, I've finally found my thing. In 1999, I returned to school in Graphic Design, and recieved my DEP. I'm presently working in Montreal as a designer, I am single, no children, and waiting for the man of my dreams. Take care everyone, and e-mail me, I'd love to know what's going on with you. sheryl_ciszewski AT yahoo.com
