June 2001 Newsletter
Here we are again with yet another newsletter.
Delays this month have been largely due to my desktop giving up the ghost and me
having to rebuild everything on my laptop including configuring RedHat Linux to
run on it. I am making the migration from Windows to Linux in light of the
new licensing provisions and privacy violations coming out with Windows XP and
Office XP. Too bad too because I liked working in Windows, but there is no
way I am going to pay annual licensing fees to run their software on my
computer. Linux is open source, most of the applications are free - priced
just right.
I need to answer some questions because I have no
intention of putting up an FAQ that no one reads.
- Q: Why are our grad pictures not on the site? A: Aside
from their poor quality, yearbook photos are copyright protected. I
don't own the rights to them and I haven't the money to purchase the rights
to them to put them on the site - especially since my last fundraising
efforts for the site resulted solely in a $6.00 USD bounced check that cost
me $15.00 in bank fees.
- Q: Why don't you answer your email? A: Well I do,
after a fashion. All RVRHS email goes into the same folder and when I
get around to it I answer it. The rest of the time, like you, I am
busy trying to make a living. If the topic seems important enough I
will answer as quickly as I can, but for the most part I leave RVRHS email
to once a month.
- Q: Why is my name (my friends name, my relatives name)
misspelled or absent from the site? A: This site is not an official RVRHS
site - in point of fact I don't think they would approve of it if they knew
it existed since they were pretty hostile the one time I tried to contact
them about getting access to old yearbooks. The information on this
site has been gathered over a five year period and put up pretty much as I
have received it. I don't know how to spell everyone's names and I
have no way of cross checking grad lists.
- Q: Why don't you just let people enter their own
information and retrieve information from a searchable database? A:
Well running a SQL server (even a mySQL server) is expensive, and search
engines only index static web pages not dynamic ones so it is easier to find
the site when all the pages are static. Also you wouldn't believe some
of the stuff that people have sent to post. I have no other way to
protect myself from liable and slander charges than to try and vet out
information that seems specious, malicious or just plain stupid. Of
course it's not perfect but that's why the legal page is there on the site.
- Q: Why are there mistakes on the site? A: One person
and over 700 pages on the site in total. Enough said. Please
point out mistakes as politely as you possibly can I get enough abusive
email as it is.
- Q: Why are updates and the newsletter not done more
frequently and in a more timely manner? A: This is not my job, it is
my hobby. I try to get around to it as quickly as I can but I cannot
and do not make any promises vis-à-vis updating the site and getting the
newsletter out.
Anyway onto new things.
