RVRHS Alumni July 00 Newsletter

Well here we are in July, Canada is 133 years old and a pretty good place to live despite the claims of a few nay Sayers. I am pleased to announce that the Class of 80 reunion photos are on site and ready to be seen. I tested the page loads with my modem and found them to take between 15 and 20 seconds which is longer than I like, but acceptable considering they are all photos. Each photo will also take about 15 seconds to load when you click on it. CD's with the TIFF and JPG files on are available to anyone who wants them for $5.00 to cover cost of CD, Jewel box, burning, envelope and mailing. If you have broadband access and have an X drive account that can take 50 megs or more I will transfer the files directly to you at no cost - the total size of all files is 45 megs for the 93 photos. Photos on site are sampled at 96 dpi photos on disk are sampled at 150 dpi.

Thanks again to those loyal Amazon.com book/CD buyers who are clicking through from my site when they buy their books it is greatly appreciated.

The javascript form at the bottom of the RVRHS main page will be replaced soon with a CGI form so that AOL and WebTV users can make use of it.

The RVRHS Newsgroup/Discussion Forum had to be reset due to a corrupted database that occurred when I was upgrading to PHP4. My own fault and I thank the folks at Axess IQ (http://www.axess.com) for going the extra mile in helping me get everything set up again. So now the Phorum is empty and could use some messages to jump start it again.

Several people had been asking questions about the whereabouts and "what's he up to?" on Gino Farrah. Anyone having information is encouraged to message me or the Newsgroup. I would also like to encourage everyone who knows anything about any former or current staff to message me about what they are up to these days.

OK, on with the stuff you are really interested in:

Anybody remember us 'old timers'? We were the first graduating class at William McMaster High School. There were 13 of us. I know where a few of the graduates are and can be reached at the above email address for more details.

Would love to hear from someone from my class. Anyone out there?

Wendy Francis (Class of 71) wendyfrancis AT compuserve.com
I graduated from the class of 1971, after attending RVRHS for only one year. Here's what I've been up to since then.

I attended Dawson College for a year, then finished up a B.Sc. at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I worked as a secretary for seven years, first at the Canadian Embassy in Washington DC and then for law firms in Washington and Vancouver. I attended law school at the University of Calgary, graduating in 1985. I practiced law with a major firm in Calgary for five years. Then it was back to school again, for a Masters in Environmental Law. During that time, I worked as a consultant advising clients how to conduct public consultation processes.

My passion as been protecting wilderness and I have been involved with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society in Calgary as a volunteer since 1986. In 1996 I became a full time conservation director, working to protect spectacular and fragile landscapes in southern Alberta. Several parks have been created as a result of campaigns in which I played a significant role. In 1999, I left Calgary to join my husband on a new venture in Boston. I am working as a consultant advising foundations who want to support conservation work in Canada.

I am married to Harvey Locke. I am helping to raise his two sons, Stuart (13) and Eric (11). I love to run, hike, backpack, read, listen to music, and play tennis. I'd love to hear from any other 1971 grads to care to be in touch.

Paul Talley (Class of 77) Paul.Talley AT aspentech.com
After RVR I went on to Champlain (Lennoxville) and McGill. Spent my summers working as a deck hand on the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast. After McGill I did research in metallurgy and high temperature chemistry at Ecole Polytechnique. I am a founding member of a research center there. I also designed sets and lighting for amateur theatrical productions. In 1995 I moved to Boston were I, like thousands of others, joined the ranks of computer geeks inside the 128 beltway. I now work as the Aspen Technology's consultant to the Mining and Metallurgy industries. The sort of occupation that takes one a lot of interesting places. Home base is Montreal for the coming year.
I have a penchant for Hawaiian shirts, cooking, traveling and hiking. So, if you see a fat guy in a loud shirt and hiking boots in the airport, come up and say hello.

Alan Emery (Class of 80) acjemery AT pacificcoast.net
Following my father's DND retirement posting to his home of Victoria BC, it has been my home since 1980 - Victoria (12 yrs) and now Sooke (west of Victoria)(8 yrs). I have been married to Christine for 11 yrs and have 2 children - Jennifer (9) and Timothy (7). Sure nice to read about everyone!

Not sure where I'll be next year but am curious to know if/when there will be a 20th reunion gathering for the class of 81.

Nadeau, Marie-Josée (Class of 81) crepuscule2000 AT sympatico.ca
After graduation in 1981, I obtained a degree in Graphic Design in 1984. I quickly thereafter met my husband, André, and married in 1985. I worked as a designer for a few years and took a hiatus to raise my three kids (Christian 9, Alexandre 6 and Marie-Christine 4). We bought our first home in Châteauguay and finally decided to pack-up and sell after 13 years of bliss (Mercier bridge, Oka crisis...need I say more?). We recently built a beautiful home in St. Lazare. I obtained another degree in Interior Decorating in 1997. I plan to re-enter the work force as a designer in September.

Bleakley Karen (Class of 81) kaybee AT dsuper.net
Karen fled the South Shore to the West Island where she currently lives in Dorval with her husband of five years, Jean (McGill BEng). After RVR, Karen completed a DEC at Champlain, St Lambert, and a BA (Psychology) and a Masters in Library and Information Studies, both from McGill. She currently manages the corporate library of PricewaterhouseCoopers (global consulting firm) here in Montreal.

Eric Martin (Class of 82) ericmartin7502 AT yahoo.com
After R.V.R. I went to John Abbott College and studied Police Technology. I'm a member of the Quebec Provincial Police and working at headquarters in Montreal. I was promoted corporal in February 00. I'm currently studying in Management to prepare my sergeants exams. Hopefully, I'll get my degree before I retire! I live in Joliette and we have two kids; Lilianne 6 and Dominic 4.

Edmund (Ed) Elce (Class of 82) Elce AT worldnet.att.net
Oh god, I grew up to be a science geek. After RVRHS I survived Champlain (St Lambert), Concordia U where I received a BSc in Chemistry in '88 and then on to McGill U to get a PhD in even more chemistry in '95. Life took me to San Francisco for a year where I worked for IBM and then on to Cleveland, Ohio where I head up an advanced materials research team at
BFGoodrich (No, it isn't for tires !!!!). In plain English, I invent new plastics. I have narrowly avoided marriage three times and continue my crusade to be an aging bachelor. I received my first patent last year and have another one on the way. These days I work full time to support my cycling habit and occasionally do good deeds in my community. Hope all of you are doing well. Cheers.

Greg Poole (Class of 83) rongreg AT hotmail.com

I'm still alive (just to spite you all!!), have a house in St. Bruno, and I'm going to be a "Daddy" this fall (Sept. 2000)! If your bored, check out my hockey league website (you will probably recognize a few names) at www.alestars.com

Liese Averbach (Coroy) (Class of 85) aver AT sprint.ca
I went to RVR during 82 and 83, and left because my Dad moved us to Ottawa. I certainly remember many of you. I would love to hear from some old RVRers and rekindle some old memories. I am currently working and living in Toronto. I went onto earn my B.A. at the university of waterloo in English. I went into publishing and then decided that that wasn't the life fo rme. So I packed my bags, sold all of my belongings and moved to the Canary Islands for a couple of years. After I got tired of the sun, and the limited technology, I decided to return to Canada, and have been living and working in the Information Technology field. (Funny things you do with your English degree!) Unfortunately, I am separated. On the bright side I have an 85-pound German Shepard, Chance. We travel and hike, through southwestern Ontario, and New York State. I'd love to hear from you guys! It has been too long.

Robert Morin (Class of 87) rmorin AT cadvision.com
I graduated in Economics at Concordia University and I am now completing The Master of Teaching Program at The University of Calgary. I will probably teach High school Mathematics after that degree since I love Math, and I love to teach students and watch them learn.
I moved to Calgary in June 1998 and worked as a teacher in a small private school the first year I was out here. The following year I began the program at The U of C. I will be finished that degree in a year.
I've been living with my girlfriend for almost 7 years now (June 2000). Santisouk (Yen) works as an engineer for Nortel Networks and that is the reason why we moved to Calgary.
I coached girl's volleyball for 10 years at College Durocher (Montreal South Shore), and in Calgary I am coaching boys volleyball with a club associated with The University of Calgary (Dinos). Last season I was assistant coach with The U of C men's team. I don't know if I'll have enough time for that again next season. I also coached Team Alberta (16 yrs old) last summer and will do so again this summer, 2000. Would like to hear from anyone interested in contacting me.

Karen Flaxington (Class of 88) kleonard AT emsb.qc.ca
Hi to everyone from the class of 88. After staying in Montreal a while, my wonderful husband and I bought a home back in St-Bruno. We now have an 11 month-old daughter. I had been working as an administrative technician at the English Montreal School Board (formerly P.S.B.G.M.) but am now enjoying 1 1/2 years off with our daughter. I have been working there for over 10 years now, but it will be hard to go back next year.
From RVR I have recently seen Patricia L'Abbee and Karalyn Knight and am still close to Karon Lapointe (class of 91). Would anyone out there have any information on Brent Coates (in RVR until Grade 9) as Karalyn has looked everywhere for him too!
I don't know about you, but it seems like high school was so long ago. I feel so old after turning 29 this month! I hope to hear from all of you!

Elizabeth Henson (Class of 88) bethenson AT hotmail.com
I went to CRC/Lennoxville, graduated from Bishop's in '93 with a BA in English, worked in Montreal a few years. Went BACK to BU ('96-'97) for a BA in History. I then moved to Missouri and did an MA in History. Missouri wasn't all bad, in Sept. 1998 I met my now fiance, Landon Smith. We are getting married, in Hudson, on August 12, 2000. Right now we are living in Texas...no idea where we'll be in the near future!

Teresa Canniff (Class of 91) teresac AT uk.ibm.com
Finished my undergrad at McGill a few years ago (BA Hons Geography), intended to save the world and didn't. I managed to travel quite extensively until I was sucked into the corporate world. Grey carpet and cubicles are growing on me. I have been in London, UK, for the past 2 years working for IBM. I met a wonderful Australian living in NY over e-mail and got married in Feb 2000. I think we'll stay in the UK for another 3 years and will probably move to Brisbane after that. Would love to hear what everyone's up to - e-mail me at teresac AT uk.ibm.com

Cheryl Gower (Class of 91) cgower AT arsdigita.com
I am currently living in Boston. I've spent all these years after high school "finding" myself and having a ton of fun. After many extremely random and hard jobs ( teenage homeless shelter/group homes/nanny etc) I am currently working at a great and fun web company called ArsDigita. I love to travel all around the country seeing live music and friends whenever I can. I'm no where close to married and the closest thing I
have to children is my two adorable cats. You can reach me at cgower AT arsdigita.com

That's all for now, catch you next month.

Denis.
