RVRHS Alumni February 00 Newsletter

Well better late than never. At the request of a few William McMaster grads I will now be including William McMaster HS as part of the RVRHS site. Anyone who had sibs who went to RVR before it was called RVR are asked to get their brothers or sisters to submit info for the Willam McMaster section.

I am still looking for grad lists from the Class of 71 and the Classes of 92-99 and soon 2000 as well. Anyone who can provide a list in text, MS Word, Excel or CSV file it would be appreciated.

PICTURES ----- I want pictures. Lots of them. As many as you can send. Ron Osbourne had a good idea for putting up grad photos but that didn't quite pan out as a result of the layout of some of the year books. Nevertheless send me your current photos and let me put them up you can mail the photos to:

Denis Bernicky
552 Prince Charles
Dorval, Qc, H9P-1Z3

Please put your name, the name of your spouse and children if they are in the photo, and your graduating year on the back of the photos.

Updates anyone? If you want to update your information send me what you want to change and I will take care of it as soon as I can. If you have siblings or friends whom you are in touch with and who haven't yet contacted the site please ask them to join. The more people who participate in the site the better it will be.

Regulars to the site will notice the addition of two small banners on the site one for Hooked on Phonics and the other for Amazon.com if you plan on buying Hooked on Phonics or buying CD, Books or Videos online do me a favour and click through from the RVRHS site to make the purchase and support the site at the same time

Although work and family take up a large part of my time, I still find time to participate in many sports activities, of which any form of hockey remains my first sports love. I still have the mind set which is to go out and do rather than sit back and watch. Hopefully that mind set prevails for years to come and that "the age factor" does not become a FACTOR!!!!!!

Gail Harper (Class of 80) rob.gail AT sympatico.ca
I would have graduated with the class of 1980, but my parents moved me into Montreal at the end of grade 9 (1978). After graduating from high school in NDG I went to Marianopolis and then to Concordia where I got a BA in geography and education. As I had been working as a pastry chef I had to decide if I was going to cook for a living or continue in school. I decided to do a Master's degree as I would have to cook everyday anyway. So I moved to Toronto in 1985 and received a Master's degree in education and public information in 1987. I have worked for both the private and public sectors, mostly with hazardous and medical wastes in a regulatory and training capacity. Currently I am with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment undertaking risk management on new air standards. Personally, since leaving RVRHS I have traveled to over 20 countries including Russia and Australia (twice) as I love to see things for myself and I learn so much from the people. I had a bout with cancer in my late 20's to early 30's which changed my perspective quite a bit. I took more time to travel and about 6 years ago I began quilting and now make quilts for sick children as well as on commission. I have been teaching quilting for four years in my spare time. Another of my hobbies is curling, which is where I met my husband Rob. We were married New Years Eve 1998 and now live in Richmond Hill, Ontario just north of Toronto.

Nancy McHarg (Class of 80) nmcharg AT orcabay.com
I live in West Vancouver with my husband, Hugh Wilson; daughter, Hannah (5); and son, Gabriel (1 ½). For the past three years, I have been working in communications for Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment, owners of the Vancouver Canucks (NHL team) and Vancouver Grizzlies (NBA). Before Orca Bay, I was the Director of Communications at WIC, a large, Vancouver-based broadcasting company. After RVR, I went to Champlain where I vacillated between creative arts and health sciences, and ended up with a DEC in commerce (basically, social sciences with math). I then spent four months backpacking through Europe and returned to do a BA in Journalism at Concordia. Internships and freelance work with Maclean's magazine and a PBS current affairs show helped me land a staff reporter's position with a Montreal weekly business newspaper (This Week in Business). After a couple of years reporting, I left my job to travel to Japan with Cheryl Carruthers (Class '81). Upon my return to Montreal I worked again on a PBS current affairs show, and then took a job at McGill University in public relations. Amidst all this, I met my husband, Hugh, through a Masters swim team at the Downtown Montreal YMCA, lived with Elizabeth Hardy (Class '81) in the McGill ghetto for a couple of years, and just thoroughly enjoyed being 20-something living in Montreal. Now, I love life in Vancouver and think parenthood and having kids is the greatest. I still keep in touch with Elizabeth as well as Joanne Hardy (' 80), Sandra Carruthers ('80), and various others through my siblings who are also all living in the Vancouver area. I hope to get to the reunion (in May '00??). Best wishes to all.

Monica and Valerie Roy (Class of 80) are living in the Kingston area. Both are married. Monica has 2 children.

French immersion at RVR finally paid off, since I am now married to a French man (from France) & raising a bilingual family! We are living on a large dairy farm on the Ottawa River, half way between Montreal & Ottawa. (We have a great view of the Laurentians out the back window.) ...After having the experience of working in the shrinking healthcare industry in Montreal & Ottawa, I set my mind to studying Services de réadaptation and became a Developmental Social Worker. I am now studying Social Work at Carleton University. This summer I should be traveling to Ireland where my mom now lives. Life is good. You just have to take the time to appreciate it! I check into my email occasionally & can be reached at relce AT chat.carleton.ca

Pat Wright (Class of 80) PWright AT thegazette.southam.ca

We have terrific three kids, Brianna (11), Shayna (9), and Michael (6) - all redheads!! I have a small freight-forwarding business, PacWest Logistics, that I do from a home-office, so I can be home with the kids. I'd love to hear from any 1981 grads, or anyone else!! (By the way, anyone who remembers my Mom - Helen Smith - who was a secretary in the V.P. office - she just retired last summer, and is still living in Beloeil with my Dad.)

Chantal Vitalis (Class of 82) chantal_vitalis AT hotmail.com
Hi everyone! I spent my first 3 years of high school at RVR so I recognize almost all your names! I currently live in Calgary where I've been making music for film and video, as well have released two CD's, one solo and one as part of Maud (a trio of weird women!). In my travels I ran into Karen McHarg in 1996, then the program director for (I think) the University of Ottawa radio station, and also ran into Shannon Ross quite a few years ago as I was backing out of a parking stall. She had just come back from living in Australia and was relocating to Calgary. I have 3 great cats, a big mortgage, and a great relationship. Ciao!

Bob Turnbull (Class of 82) bobt AT ca.ibm.com
Graduated from McGill in 1988 with an Electrical Engineering degree and moved to Toronto later that year to start work for IBM. Been here ever since and have come to love the city (hey, it's a pretty hopping 'burg!). I now work at the IBM Toronto Laboratory as the Team Lead for one of the Information Technology groups. Essentially that means we get to design, build and support the computing infrastructure for the different Development teams here. Fun stuff for the most part. I met my wife Anumpa on the Ultimate Frisbee field back in 1990 (one of the many IBM Social Clubs). We eventually tied the knot on May 21st 1995 and it was the best day of my life...She also works at the IBM Lab and is part of the Database Technology group (they develop IBM's DB2 products). We bought a house in Toronto in July of 1998 and absolutely love our neighbourhood in the city. No children yet, but we're both pretty busy with various activities and hobbies (the CD collection has become a living breathing entity of its own at this point...).

Janet Macdonald (Class of 82) robjan AT centra.ca
What I've been up to since I graduated from school: At first I worked for the Bank of Montreal, then on to an Advertising agency from there I went to work for the big Engineering firm SNC/Lavalin. I slowly worked my way up to being a Supervisor of Document Control. From there I went to work on the Hibernia Project (you must of heard of it). I finally settled down with an Engineering Company in Montreal (ABGS Inc.) and have been with them for 5 years now, been in engineering for the last 10, it's not as bad as all that, (working for engineers that is). I'm a Supervisor with my company and I also prepare documents for presentations to bid on Projects (meaning I do all the overheads and charts for them). In between all of that, I got married to Rob Sears (Class of '83) we've been together for 10 years married for 8. Rob also works for the same company as I do, but he is into computers, and doing very well. We have two beautiful children, our daughter Jennifer Rose is 8 years old and our son Benjamin is 7. They both go to Mountainview School in Otterburn and I must say they are our pride and joy. I'm also a leader with the Girl Guides of Canada (going on 4 years now). I opened a Brownie Unit in Beloeil and am Brown Owl, the girls and I have a blast, and I wouldn't change a thing. As you can pretty much figure out Rob and I have a house in Beloeil, right around the corner from RVR, have been there for 4 years now. Anyway, that pretty much puts you up to date with me. Please get in contact with me, my e-mail at work is macdonaldj AT abgs.com or my home e-mail is robjan AT centra.ca.

Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on the day!!!) I'm still in school. I've taken two years off at different times - one between CEGEP and undergrad and another between undergrad and law school. I studied Criminology in undergrad and am presently finishing up my Common Law degree at Ottawa U. I will graduate in April 2000, but I will then do an extra year to get my Civil Law degree in case I ever want to practice in Quebec. I plan to practice in Ontario for a few years, but after that, who knows...! I'm still with the same guy - Rob Mesher - who I met in the summer of 1989 and who was my date for my prom... We live in Hull and have two dogs - Mikah (a 6 year old Husky) and Baloo (a 6 month old pitbull).
