RVRHS Alumni December 2002 Newsletter
A big thank you to Andre Nault for
his donation via PayPal to RVRHS.ORG - your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Another special thank you goes out to John Genereux for taking the time and
expending the effort to get into and photograph the interior of RVRHS and
then email me the pictures he has taken. The pictures will be up on the site
in the near future. John also informs me that while at the school one of the
administrators made a gift of the 1976 RVRHS Symphonic Band album, surely a
rarity. The jacket of the album lists all of the band members the songs
recorded and who plays on which song. If people are interested in having a
copy please let me know and I will pass the info along to John.
Word has come of late that Ed DeJean, former VP and all around nice guy,
passed away in October 2002. My condolences go out to the family.
Steve Dunn (Class of 77) Pupstoo AT aol.com is looking for a yearbook from 1977
if anyone out there has a spare or can make a copy for him.
Thank you to Alexandra Shand for her contribution to the Arts section of the
website. It would be nice if more people who still write, draw, compose or
anything else would submit their work for the site.
Peter Scharf (Class of 69) pgkit AT telusplanet.net
I have been having a pretty good ride, although it sometimes gets lonely up
in the Peace River Country of northern Alberta. On the advice of Billy
Sargeant, from down the street, I went to UNB, and graduated in '73. I did
a stint in Ottawa, then headed west on the train with Victor Gibbs. I
drifted from Edmonton, to Prince George to Banff, to Vancouver and then to
Calgary. I became a carpenter and eventually moved north to Grande Prairie.
I noticed an ad for a farm with a lake and a log barn. Oh boy! After a
summer in a tee pee, with goats, chickens etc, I noticed that living off the
land was not my calling. I went back to construction work. Armed with a
little more self knowledge, some practical experience, and a love for the
land, here I am.
Wendy, her husband, and two children live next door. I met Elaine, from
Saskatchewan, on the stage of a little theater production. We married in
1984. We have one son, Dylan, who is now thirteen, and likes to play games
on the computer. Norm, my Dad, lives in a cabin over by the lake. I am
finally beating him on the golf course, although that has more to do with
his poor vision and difficulties walking, than my own skills.
We like to luge, ski and travel in the winter, and golf, hike and camp
in the summer. In my spare time, I manage my kitchen cabinet business,
which now employs 30 people.
Had beers with Jimmy Logan, ten years ago, lunch with James Strike three
years ago, and Don McCrae dropped by the shop last winter.
Glen Harvey (Class of 71) g.harvey AT telus.net
It is amazing what you can find on the internet. Bit of a trip down memory
lane. In case any one is interested I married Anna Markusson in Montreal,
moved to Edmonton Ab. in 1975, then to Calgary in 1989. Divorced in 1994 . I
have one son, Eric 15 years old. Remarried to Jill who has two children
Steph 16 and Kenny 13. Work for the same company I started with 31 years ago
formally Ronalds Printing now Quebecor World in Sales. If you remember me,
please drop a line.
Nancy Girard (Class of 72)ngirardbegin AT rogers.com
I was at R.V.R. from 1969 - 1972. Of particular memory is Mrs. Elison
greeting me each day with "You vant to fly!! Out of my class - fly, fly" --
now tell me, how could I say "no". And gathering at Gaby's (the little
restaurant across the highway) for french fries & gravy during our spares.
Did you ever flatten pennies on the train tracks? How about the VW Beetle
some guys rolled into the lobby and left there (I think the car was one of
the teachers). Remember the Garage down the highway where we could buy
cigarettes for .50 cents! And, May West cream cakes from the cafeteria
vending machine : ) &the big fire at the CIL plant &.and our attempt
at
staging a protest - on the Highway? Karen Robyn, Barb Firlotte, Christine &
Angie Dooley.... I married Paul Bégin (an RVR alumni from 1972) -- we did a
short stint up in northern Québec in 1975 -- then moved to Ottawa in 1976
(we were headed out West but never did make it). I love Ottawa but don't
really plan to stay here forever. It's been a great place for our family of
three children to grow up in (and numerous birds, cats, hamsters, snakes,
iguana, snails, crickets, caterpillars &..). Who am I today? (No - I'm not
a
Vet). Well, I love the outdoors & camping (we have a 1971 VW camper), enjoy
just getting together with friends, read a lot, golf some, like to travel,
have a passion for photography, my work is related to web
development/communications. Life has had it's ups and downs, but I roll with
the punches no regrets, that's what's important. If there is anyone that
remembers me drop me a line and let me know what you're up to.
Steve Davies (Class of 73) davies_steve AT yahoo.com
Married in 1976.......4 kids later, living in Mississauga.....
Malcom Livingstone (Class of 73) dlivings AT vt.edu
I left Canada after graduating and spent 7 years in England and Scotland. In
1981 I immigrated to Australia and have lived there with my whole family
ever since until last year when I got a job at Virginia Tech in the US. I
was married in 1985 and have two daughters (aged 7 and 5). I was late
getting to college but graduated from Griffith University (Brisbane,
Australia) in 1987 and got my PhD (biotechnology) from the University of
Queensland in 1999. I loved my high school years at RVR and they are the
best memories of my life (my daughters are not memories). I especially
remember Geoff and Steve Dixon, Keith Murphy and Roy Dullege. I had a
massive crush on Wendy Draycott all the way thru high school and never said
a word to her. There are plenty of other names I recognize but I can't
always put a face to the name. Feel free to contact me.

Robert Page (Class of 78) page AT upei.ca
After graduation, our family moved back to my mother's home province of PEI.
I'm still here, and I've come to appreciate the slower pace of life, but at
17 it was a case of culture shock.I earned my Chemistry degree from UPEI
(Not quite McGill!), and started work that fall... as an AM radio announcer.
That was fun for a year, but I'd also discovered computers at UPEI, and
started doing some programming jobs. By 1987 I was back at UPEI, this time
as a database analyst. It's been 15 interesting years so far...
Susan Snell (Class of 80) ssnell AT intelerad.com

Aquired an education. B.Sc. Physics and M.Ed. Now teaching grades 1,2,3.
Pretty cool. Kept me out of the military industrial complex. I do not yet
have nuclear capability at home but you never know. I've been married for a
while and have two boys who are full of mischief. They don't have nuclear
weapons, thank goodness. I'm living in Ottawa after a stint on Vancouver
Island and also in Washington State. I lived downriver from the Hanford
nuclear reservation - hope it hasn't affected me too much. Life is good,
having fun with the kids. Cheers!
Steven Myles (Class of 86) smyles AT tomaweb.com
Hey everyone... After RVR I went to Dawson for a short while, worked for a
year then went back to school to become a micro-computer technician but
ended up working as a programmer. I worked for and owned a few software
companies in Montreal but then followed the almighty dollar to the suburbs
of Toronto in 1995. I now own a web/software company called TomaWeb. I was
married for 10 yrs but now I am a proud single father of 2 boys and 1 girl.
I have recently moved to Brantford, On.. I'd love to hear from any of the
old gang so drop me a note.
Victoria Walker (Class of 87) wickedtoria AT hotmail.com
I have been travelling for over 6 years. After finishing my University
Degree and working at Sun Life of Canada for over 2 years, I thought I
needed a change. Packed my backpack and saw most of Europe, Scandinavia &
Russia - Superb! Lived and worked in London, England for about 1 1/2. I
now live in a beautiful small beach town in New Zealand! I am starting to
lay some roots here - may need some grounding for my old age - Not. Seeing
all the names on this site has brought back so many amazing memories. I
never thought I would hear from anyone I knew growing up or from High School
ever again. From small town Chambly to small town New Zealand - Half way
around the world. May all of your dreams come true and I hope you are all
happy & healthy.

Well, lets see... Moved out of Quebec after graduation to Ontario.
Currently working in Toronto as Corporate Network Security Administrator for
an international firm. I spend not a whole lot of time in Canada anymore, as
they keep shipping me to the remotes for
various nonsense. Not married, not divorced, and haven't wandered down that
road, yet, but still hopeful. I have also become a Priest. Go figure.
<smile> All the Best to You and Yours!

To all those I used to laugh at, and to all those who used to laugh at
me...it's been a long time. Just to touch base, I'm currently in my Junior year
at VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) majoring in Sociology and minoring
in child psych, playing soccer (who
knew?) and having a blast. Aside from all the crap that goes on in the
ghetto I live in, I'm surviving. Hope all is well with everyone, and looking
forward to a future reunion.
