RVRHS Alumni December 01 Newsletter

Hi all, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. Late again - so what else is new? Seems like I have joined a burgeoning club, at least that's what my doctor tells me. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes a few weeks ago and have been working hard at getting my blood sugar under control. I would welcome advice and recipes from anyone who has been living with diabetes and has some coping suggestions - especially in the realm of evening snack food :)

Those of you with AT home.com email addresses and were caught in the Excite debacle please forward your new email addresses at your earliest possible convenience. Remember to include your grad year and your name when you were going to school if it has changed since you graduated.

The Riverside School Board and the Commission Scolaire Des Patriotes have paved the way to trade schools and end English language instruction at Richelieu Valley Regional High School. Though the process has not yet been completed but it does not look like it the situation will reverse itself. This does not mean that RVRHS will cease to exist, it means that it may cease to exist as an English language school and students may have to be bused to Macdonald Cartier. This is just part of the ongoing cultural genocide of the English population of Quebec and I don't think anyone should be surprised by it. As long as the school is named RVRHS new graduating classes will be added to the site.

Unfortunately it seems that pranksters are afoot in the former RVRHS population. There have been numerous submissions under various peoples names that were not penned by those people. Changes have to be made in the way submissions are accepted. The first change is effective immediately: I will post any email address you want posted on the site, but I need a real email address from a real ISP to post any information under someone’s name. That means Hotmail accounts, Yahoo mail accounts and any web based email service through which an emails original point of origin cannot be traced easily will not be accepted. This includes emails that are stripped of headers through anonymous remailers. Any submission made on site using the form will receive a confirmation email from myself. If it is not responded to the submission will not be posted. Any submission made without an email address will be discarded. I really hate to do this - as much because it makes more work for me as anything else - but the alternative is to close the site.

Class of 81 reunion photos had to be removed from the site due to complaints from people in the photos. Basically I am allowing a small group of people to censor the site in order to avoid legal expenses – any suggestions on how to deal with this would be appreciated.

Another call for submissions. Surely there must be some photographers, artist, poets and writers out there somewhere who would like to share their work on site. So stop being shy and send some stuff in to me.

Have you got a photo of yourself or your family that you would like to share with others? Email it to me with your name and grad year (from a verifiable email address) and it will be posted to the site. If you don't have a scanner you can always mail me the pictures at:

Denis Bernicky 552 Prince Charles Dorval, Qc H9P 1Z3

Really had fun with this site and I have about 20 yearbooks to match faces to names. Brought back all the good times you all gave me. Since we have moved to balmy Victoria, I've thrown away my red pen and mark book and laugh all day long.

Jim Leal 1962 fjleal AT sympatico.ca
- I'm now retired and living in Simcoe Ontario, about 20 miles south of Brantford, on the north shore of Lake Erie, of course with the love of my life Pat (nee Saunders of Otterburn Park). (I'm 58 but don't tell anyone)
- After high school I went to Radio College of Canada then upon graduation there went to work for a cable TV company, then to C-I-L in McMasterville for a couple of years then settled down in the "oil industry" working for Petrofina (now Petro-Canada) until 1977 and then up to Ontario to work for Texaco Canada, now owned by Imperial Oil (Esso) and finished up this past September working as a "Buyer" in the Purchasing Department. Had a very rewarding career in the oil industry.
- We have two children Jennifer and Greg and they are both in the "law enforcement" field. Jennifer is a 1st Class police officer in the Windsor Ontario Police Services and a graduate of Windsor University. Greg is presently in the security business working at Windsor Raceway and Casino and is a graduate of Sheriden College in Oakville. We are quite proud of both of them.
- Pat is still working for the Norfolk County Health Department as a secretary and I told her she is working until she is 65 ha ha. She is just itching to get out since I left.
- I'm a Past-President of the Simcoe Lions Club and the Club keeps me busy being their Bulletin Editor now-a-days.
Drop us a line and let us know about you. We go to see my parents who are still in McMasterville and my sister Sharon is still there even though she is recently divorced. Love to hear from you guys. See the pictures attached. Yes I'm still bald. (Updated Nov 25, 01)

I lived in Montreal while attending Dawson College where I met my husband David Jandron. We were married in 1974 and moved to Saint-Bruno in 1978. We have 2 daughters, Medea will be 21 on January 1st,2002 and Shauna turned 18 on October 2nd, 2001. Both girls have also graduated from RVRHS and now attend Dawson.

Rod Syme (Class of 70) tallsyme AT wave.home.com
I live in Ottawa with my wife Caroline, an American, and our two children, Lydia ( age 12 ) and Jaime ( age 8 ) both of whom we adopted in South America. I have worked and travelled in many parts of Canada and also Africa, the Indian sub-continent and South America and continue to enjoy travel greatly. I graduated from medical school in 1980 and am a surgeon and Chief of Surgery at an Ottawa Hospital. Through my work I have met up with Jimmy Griffiths and Brad Haines from my year and met Jim Sproule ( Class of '71 ) as he is also a physician, last I heard, in London, Ontario. It's interesting to hear how many people have gone west. Hi Barb and Gary, Janice and Bob and Wanda ( the nickname "Thumper" comes to mind ...). I still am in regular contact with Thomas Stenzel from my class. Olga Zuyderhoff lives nearby in Perth, Ontario. with her three children. It's quite a trip down memory lane to scroll down the list of names from my class from over 30 years ago. My e-mail will be changing soon but is currently tallsyme AT wave.home.com and I'd be happy to hear from anyone.

Wow! It's been a long time, Lois Fowler and I were married in 1981; we have two kids, Johanna 17 and Chris 19. I met Lois at Champlain College (never talked to her in high school) where we both completed the three-year business program. We have lived in St-Hubert, Granby, and now call Aylmer, Que our home, which will soon be called Gatineau. We both work in Ottawa, Lois at The City of Ottawa, Social Services and I for Security on Parliament Hill. Lois still enjoys sports such as ice hockey, indoor and outdoor soccer, I still like puttering with old cars. We share a common interest of cycling; our kids have followed in our footsteps with Johanna excelling in sports and Chris good at taking things a part and leaving them that way. Except with the few bumps involved with teenagers and aging parents, we are pretty much living happily ever after. We would like to hear from others from the class; you can e-mail Lois at Lois.Fowler AT city.ottawa.on.ca or me. Take Care for now.

I worked for some years in the International art market and decided to settle in Toronto in the public sector. I now work at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection as Creative Director and teach at the University of Toronto. My most recent curatorial project can be seen at www.art2life.ca

Scott Murphy (Class of 80) murpheus AT angelfire.com

Peter Schreiber (Class of 80) suenpete AT shaw.ca
I'm living in Vancouver with my wife Sue (met her at University of New Brunswick in 88) and have a very wakeful 6 week old girl, Anika, who we're still just getting to know. But she's still adorable, even in the very early hours. We also have a 1.5 year old Australian Shepherd who usually manages to keep a smile on my face.
I graduated from UNB with a degree in Mechanical Engineering (and Shotokan Karate... I think I'm more proud of that one) and bounced around the country for 5 years working as a project engineer for a construction company. Travel was ok, but hated the work.
I quit that in 94 and moved out here to ski for a season. That seemed much more civilized.I had 3 more so-so jobs from 95 to 97 'till I got work at a company called CREO. They are a graphic arts company that builds digital imaging equipment for commercial printers. I did on-line support for 3 years specializing in thermal imaging "lasers" which was totally cool, and since July I've been a product support manager for the thermal imaging side of the company.
What else....
I've been playing in blues band for a couple of years. Mr. Henkie would be proud to know that (less proud if he heard us). Mostly people from work. We're not great but it's fun and we've picked up a couple of gigs, usually including a 45 min spot at our C'mas party. A friendly audience is always a bonus.
I was teaching Karate for a few years. We bought a house out in the burbs and it was getting tough to do the drive after work, so I haven't done it in about a year. I train when I can, but lately other things have taken priority. I ski as much as I can. I worked on the ski patrol for 5 years out here to guarantee that I got out enough.

Christine Gagnon (Class of 82)
It is with great sorrow that I write to inform you that my sister Christine sadly passed away, along with her fiancé, in a tragic car accident outside Plattsburgh NY on February 16, 1996.
After RVRHS, my sister received her B.Sc. in Biology from Concordia University in 1987, her M.Sc. from McGill's Institute of Parasitology in 1990, and had nearly completed her Ph.D. from McGill's School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition when the accident occurred. Throughout her academic years, she received many prizes and awards, as was recognized within the scientific community for her valuable scientific contributions.
We miss her tremendously and will always keep her in our hearts.

Living in Las Vegas Nevada (yuppers..I live right smack dab in sin city!!)-moved here 2 years ago/status: married for 2 years/no children except for 5 month yorkshire terrier named ZEUS (and hubby can be considered the BIGGER kid!)/birthday is august 28 and wedding date was September 28th/currently not working by choice! Before moving to sin city I was living in Calgary, working for Hudson Bay Company as a department manager for the Ralph Lauren clothing line-training to be a buyer-but guess what marriage did? Before Calgary lived in Edmonton doing the retail business inside and out as managers/merchandisers and before that I was in Lethbridge completing the university thing then before that I was in Fort McMurray doing the graduating thing then before that I was finishing the grades that I would have finished in R.V.R.H.S! This is my story and I'm sticking to it.

I would have graduated from RVRHS in '84, but my parents moved us to Ontario the summer of '80 after I completed grade 7. So, the only people from RVRHS that may remember me are the ones that spent time with me from kindergarten to grade 6 at Apple Valley elementary. I'm still living in Ontario, now in Whitby. I'm recently engaged with plans of getting married Thanksgiving 2002.

Hello. I graduated from Vanier College in music studies and then went to Concordia University and got a bachelor of fine arts in 1993. From there I washed dishes in some of the finest restaurants in town. I am now in Kitchener, (On) with my girlfriend, Catherine. For the past couple of years I have been working as a background performer for television and movies. (Basically, I am the guy in the movie walking a dog or riding by on a bike.) For the last three weeks I have been working on a new Jackie Chan movie being filmed in Toronto. I am having a blast. Well, I hope everyone is in good health and having a good time out there.

Like many of you, after RVR I also went to Champlain. At Champlain, I met my present wife of seven years - Sue.
After Champlain, I attended Concordia where I obtained a B.Sc. in biochemistry. I began, but because of a joboffer, never completed a Masters in Physical Chemistry at McGill.
In 1992, I moved to Ottawa where I began what I hope is a long career with the federal government. I worked as an Industrial Hygienist with Transport Canada in Ottawa. In 1993, I moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where I worked for CFB Moose Jaw as a civilian Safety Officer. In 1997, I moved to Mission, British Columbia as a Safety Officer with Fisheries and Oceans Canada before switching fields into Human Resources in 1999, where I remain.
My hobbies include gardening, reading, and playing strategy games. I am an avid ocean kayaker, mountain hiker, squash player, and jogger. I ran the Seattle Marathon in 1998 (just to say that I ran one).
My wife and I have two dogs and no children....yet. I am involved with the Big Brothers Association of the Fraser Valley.
I would love to hear from old classmates. E-mail me at The_Langers AT MyBC.com

After high school I went to LaSalle College and graduated with a degree in Hotel/Restaurant Administration. From there it was on to Bishop's University for a BBA majoring in Human Resources. After university I moved to Vancouver where I stayed for 10 years working as a Property Manager. I was married but am now separated; no kids, but one very cute and loving cat. I moved back to Otterburn Park in May of 2001 and am currently trying to re-adjust to life in the old hometown! I have enjoyed meeting and spending time with people from my past and look forward to re-connecting with others.

This is what I call an internet site!!! It is amazing to hear about all of you. Not to sound redundant, but we should all get together. Let's see...I did a lot of drifting between graduation and 1999....lived in Arizona...worked in the gold mines...blackjack dealer at the Montreal Casino....chimney sweep foe Steve Clark... Now I am working for CGI Telecom. I am a Senior Consultant and have a team of roughly 20 people under me. Something good actually came out of Dawson!!! I just got married on August 18, 2001 to my beautiful wife, Jennifer Brown. Bought a house in D.D.O....(or should I say Montreal?!?!?!) No kids yet. I see Steve Clark often as he just bought a hobby farm in Alexandria, On., and he is getting married next May. He was my best man and now I get to return the favour!! Well...I miss all you guys!!! I would love to see or hear from any one of you. Please drop me a line whenever!!! Take care y'all!!!!!

What a surprise to come across this site...Quick rundown of my life post-RVR: Graduated from Champlain, moved to Whistler for a while, then backpacked thru Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia for half a year. Went back to school at U of Waterloo, but managed to spice up the ole' education by escaping to Snowmass Village, CO for 3 seasons (the mountains were calling...). Eventually managed to get the long-awaited BSc. Currently living in Toronto with a sweetheart named Jeff (2yrs) and back in school (??) at Chiropractic College. Yup, another 4 yrs...it seems I just can't get enough of this education stuff. P.S.: For all those who can, come visit Europe. It's a great experience, you learn a lot about the world and get a fresh perspective on where you come from. Work here if you can (in the U.K. Canadians can get work permits for part-time jobs easily.) Finally, if you go while under 26 there are plenty of discounts. I strongly recommend it.
