RVRHS Alumni April
Newsletter
Well we are well into May,
and by the feel of it into Summer as well. This time next year there will be
a reunion at RVRHS. So just as I have in the past I encourage all of you who
have not been in touch with Frances Howe McKechnie to contact her with your
address and phone at AMckech563 AT aol.com
.
There is a pleasant synchronicity with the timing of the reunion for anyone
who is a bird watcher. The City of Montreal just appointed Dr. David Bird of
McGill University to head up a bird festival on Victoria Day weekend (La fete
Dollard Des Ormeaux) next year. Bird watchers can catch the reunion and add
to their life list at the same time.
As always I am on the look out for class lists for 1984 and all classes from
1991 to present. Lists can be mailed to me:
Denis Bernicky
552 Prince Charles
Dorval, Qc, H9P-1Z3
They can also be e-mailed in standard TXT or CSV format (please no XLS, MDB
or DOC files). I can also be reached by fax at 514-631-9950 or by phone at 514-952-7231.
Thanks to everyone who sent in information this month it is appreciated. We
are now on the lookout for more information on former and current staff of RVRHS
as well as additions to the staff list. Additions should also include support
staff in Admin and Building Maintenance.

April 2nd '99 saw a small reunion of an old RVR gang. Richard Howe (79) rkh
AT hnc.com and his wife, Nancy Langevin (78) nrh AT abac.com , hosted a surprise
dinner at their home in San Diego just to see the look on Danny McCarthy's face
after about 17 years! With the help of Michael McCarthy (81), who told Danny
that he had to come all the way from Phoenix to play in a golf tournament, the
evening was a "Do you remember when... ?" Also in town for the fun was Francis
Tarbox, of Calgary (President of CTH Systems ftarbox AT cthsystems.com ) who
left RVR in '77, with his two girls and Peter Carleton (78) of San Diego with
his wife and two kids. We missed Steve Dubuc (79), but will catch up with him
before he heads off to work across Europe for a couple of months in May. And
yes, the competition still lives on... Danny beat Richard by one stroke in a
golf game the next day!
Also: Bruce Langevin (76) is married with 2 girls and lives outside of Ottawa.
He works in various churches throughout Ontario as a lay minister.

AT ns.sympatico.ca sent this along:
I was trying to sum up the last 19 years in my head, and frankly I have a hard
enough time remembering what happened 19 days ago. After graduating RVR my father
was transferred back to NS. (I didn't want to move back because I had made new
friends and was looking forward to going on to Cegep). Anyway I had to go back
to high school here and do grade 12.
After graduating again, I found a job in a restaurant and moved into my own
pad at the age of 18. That was fun. I hopped from restaurants to the bar scene,
finally gathering enough experience to move up to the management level. That's
when I decided I hated working weekends and needed to get a formal education.
So I bit the bullet and got a part time job bar tending at a busy club downtown
and I went back to university at age 29. I took a Bachelor of Science degree
majoring in Applied Human Nutrition, minor in Chemistry ( I remember sucking
at Chemistry in high school but graduated with honours this time!). I went on
to get an internship at the QEII in Halifax and at long last became a Registered
Dietitian this past September. I recently have started my own consulting business
where I give educational seminars, do one on one counseling and am getting ready
to teach some continuing Ed classes in the evenings. From a personal perspective
I got married on my 30th birthday. An act of desperation you ask? Well I never
really had a 30th birthday, I only have anniversaries from now on. Plus it gives
my husband a shot at remembering the date. For hobbies, I love to create with
food and am working at developing a cookbook which will be ready before I die,.....
Hopefully.
My husband and I both own and ride Harley Davidsons and get mistaken for mean
people on a regular basis. We have a cottage about 2 hours from here that is
very rustic but is right on the ocean. We have great weekends there with friends
and family, lobster bakes, corn boils the whole shabu. We built a house in Bedford
which is right outside of Halifax, about a year and a half ago. We did all the
research ourselves and became our own contractor, it saved us about $35,000.00
no kidding!!! We have no kids at present and are uncertain whether we will venture
there or not in the near future. We love animals and they are so much easier
to look after. Well that's it in a nutshell. I'm hoping to get to the reunion
in May of 2000.
Kevin Rochford (Class of 80) krochford
AT dawsoncollege.qc.ca Sent this along:
I hung out on the benches playing hearts for a semester at Champlain/St-Lambert,
and I remember going back to RVR to see Scott Murphy as *Jesus* in JC Superstar.
Jesus Murphy. I then spent the next three semesters at Champlain/Lennoxville.
While there, I was lucky enough to be chosen as a participant in the inaugural
exchange program with Knox Community College in Spauldings, Jamaica.
It was then time for a road trip, so I packed my car with my skis and some sandwiches
and ended up in Florida. My one week stay with friends became a three month
adventure in *the sunshine state*. And I never did make it to
Colorado to see Michele Chiasson.
While I was away, my folks sold their house and I was effectively homeless upon
my return. I ended up staying with a relative in Laval and commuting to McGill
the first semester. I found a sublet in the *McGill Ghetto* for
the second semester and I still dream about the critters...
I met my wife at a Management Bash ($0.50 beer!). She wasn't a student at the
time and I wasn't in Management. Go figure. While at McGill, I rowed with the
Novice Men's Eights and lived with Andrew Moore ('81) in a couple
of different apartments in NDG. After graduating in '86 with a B.Ed. (Early
Childhood), I promptly left town.
Since entering the *real* world, I've had all sorts of jobs. I worked in my
dad's sign shop. I did computer graphics and slide presentations way before
the era of PowerPoint. I was an optical camera operator. And I've worked at
Dawson College on a part-time replacement occasional contractual basis for a
bunch of years. I was in the Computer Assisted Learning lab for a couple of
years. I was in the AV department for a while. I worked in the Library, and
I'm now in the Bookstore as the Merchandise Control freak, uhhh, clerk.
I got married to Marilyn in 1990 and our daughter, Kathleen, turned five this
past March. I was a stay-at-home dad for her first ten months before coming
back to Dawson. And I've managed to spend every June to September with Katie.
It's been so great. And, no, I never actually have taught since graduating.
I'd love to hear from people. Even if you hated my guts in high school.
Cindy Carswell (Class of 82) has left McGill to work at Pfiser - I found this
out through a contact at McGill. Unfortunately she forgot to update her e-mail
since then. Anyone in contact with her please remind her to send her new e-mail
address to me.
Well that's if for now - with any luck next months release will be as good as
this one. Thanks again to everyone who contacted me in the past month.
